Stubborn Mathare Salvage A Point Against Tusker, Sony Stun Nzoia

MACHAKOS, Kenya- Tusker FC battled to a 1-1 draw against Mathare United FC in a SportPesa Premier League (SPL) match staged at Machakos Stadium in Machakos on Saturday.

The hosts notched their opening goal in the 74th minute through Timothy Otieno who converted a penalty after Jackson Namanda was brought down at the box by David Owino.

Mathare leveled in the 93rd through super-sub Omulanga Klinsman who drilled in a screamer that flew past Tusker goal-keeper Emery Mvuyekure into the left corner of the net.

“Poor defensive skills on my side made us lost the game. We lacked concentration in the dying minutes,” Tusker custodian Robert Matano lamented.

“Tusker is a good side, winning a point against them is a step toward the right direction,” Mathare Manager Ali Salim underscored.

Tusker, who missed the services of Robert Mboya, Humphrey Mieno, Apollo Otieno- who were out with injuries- came close to scoring in the third minute when they won the first corner but Mathare custodian Job Ochieng easily came off his line to gather the ball comfortably.

Mathare forward Chris Ochieng hit a shot from the edge of the box in the 11th but hawk-eyed  Mvuyekure blocked it for a corner.

Ochieng showed great reflexes three minutes later with a one hand save, punching off a Jackson Macharia close range shot.

Mvuyekure saved shots by Clifford Alwanga and captain Kevin Kimani in the 21st and 30th  before the sides proceeded for half time break at 0-0.

Stephen Kadogo and Salmon Omollo found back of the net for Sony and the victory moved the visitors from the basement to the middle of the table.
