Okutoyi named in prestigious global list alongside pop icon Rihanna

Okutoyi was crown the 2024 African Games champion, clinching Kenya’s first tennis gold medal in 46 years.

Kenya’s tennis gem Angela Okutoyi made it to the Her Network Women of the Week list thanks to the excellent run she had at the recently concluded African Games in Accra, Ghana. 

Okutoyi was named in the list alongside nine other women from different corners of the world including popular Barbadian singer Rihanna and the recently appointed Kenya Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer (CEO) June Chepkemei.

Other women who made the cut include Anta Babacar Ngom, the first woman to vie for a Presidential seat in Senegal in over a decade, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Lydia Fordson, Folake Owodunni, Bella Disu and Stephanie Coker Aderinokun.

According to Her Network, all of the 10 women did something extraordinary to motivate those who look up to them.

“Each of these queens have made significant contributions to their respective fields and continues to serve as a source of inspiration for many others all around the world,” read part of the statement from the organization.

Okutoyi, who has taken the tennis world by storm since breaking into the limelight, won Kenya’s first tennis gold medal in the games after 46 years of waiting.

She added a silver medal to her trophy-laden career after emerging second in the doubles category.

The impressive performances in Ghana drew the Auburn University student closer to her childhood dream of playing in the Olympic Games.

“Gold and silver at the 2023 African Games. Couldn’t be more proud of my performance this week and for the amazing team I had around me! This result is just a stepping stone to greater things ahead of me. See you guys in Paris,” noted the 20-year-old.

Her Network is a platform that encourages and inspires women to set examples to others and stand in their greatness. It amplifies the stories and voices of ladies, both young and old globally.

The platform was established in 2016 by Nigeria’s marketing and public relations consultant Nkem Onwudiwe.
