Gor Mahia began their 2022/23 Kenya Premier League season with a vital victory as they beat Nzoia Sugar 1-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.

The record KPL winners battled for the win in a highly competitive match and all 3 points were sealed by a Benson Omalla goal in the second half.

Omalla has been in good goal-scoring form during the extended pre-season and his sole goal was enough to give new head coach Jonathan McKinstry a winning start.

Gor patron and former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga was among the crowd in the stadium cheering on K'Ogalo as the fans celebrated the return of Kenyan top flight football.

Gor had not beaten Nzoia in the league since 2020 with both matches last season ending in identical 1-1 stalemates.

McKinstry replaced German tactician Andreas Spier who left at the end of last season after steering K'Ogalo to a top-four finish in the country's topflight league.

Gor, who returned where they belong as they announced a titanic partnership with gaming giants SportPesa, are chasing a record-extending 20th league title.

Their next assignment will be an away match against Bidco United next Saturday.

In another KPL match on Saturday, AFC Leopards began their season with a convincing 2-0 away victory against Ulinzi Stars at the soldiers complex.

Leopards, who were unable to field 10 of their first XI players due to FIFA bans, were unbothered as their youthful side dominated proceedings.

Kingsley Ojo Fansanmi scored a brace to guarantee all 3 points for Ingwe and Ulinzi coach Bernard Mwalala suffered a disappointing start in charge of the soldiers.

Elsewhere at the Bukhungu Stadium, Tusker FC picked up where they left off last season with an impressive 2-1 win against Kakamega Homeboyz.

Lawrence Luvanda converted from the spot in the 28th minute before Jackson Macharia scored his first of many for the season in the 69th minute.

Collins Masinza pulled one back for the hosts 10 minutes later but it was not enough as the Brewers hang on to the lead until the final whistle.
