KERICHO, Kenya- World Junior Cross-Country champion Beatrice Chebet has set her sight on world championships slated for Doha, Qatar in September.

Chebet is buoyed with the gold medal she won in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark where she beat Ethiopian pair of  Alemitu Tariku and Tsigie Gebreselama in a dramatic finish on March 30.

“I’m already fit, I’m just maintaining shape and my hope is that I will be selected to represent Kenya in Doha.

“I want to win another medal for my country,” Chebet underlined when she was presented with the Sports Journalists Association  of Kenya (SJAK)/StarTimes Sports Personality  of the Month Award for March 2019 in Kericho on Thursday.

" I'm happy to win this award. I’m glad that someone saw the way I fought hard in Denmark to bring home the medal.I thank God for the victory because it was a very tough event,” Chebet highlighted.

On her way to winning the coveted accolade, Chebet edged out World-Cross Senior Women champion Helen Obiri, Simon Ngige who was the top ranked Kenyan golfer at the 2019 Magical Kenya Open Championship held at Karen Golf and Country Club in Nairobi and Sharon Kiprono of Kenya Pipeline  who was voted Best Attacker at the Africa Women Club Volleyball Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

Following her victory, Chebet took home a 42-inch Digital TV and KSh 100,000 prize money. She becomes the 21st winner of the honur since its inception in 2017.

“Chebet is an inspiration to many, especially girls who are eager to compete at the highest level. We will endeavor to encourage more women to embrace sports,” StarTimes Marketing Director and Public Relations, Japheth Akhulia, underscored.

Chebet joins a glittering list of top sportsmen and women who have won the monthly gong  among them Fatuma Zarika, Eliud Kipchoge, Beatrice Chepkoech, Mary Keitany, Wycliffe Kinyamal, Hellen Obiri, chess player Sasha Mongeli, swimmer Maria Brunhelner ,rally driver Manvir Baryan and boxer Judy Waguthii.
