Gor Beat Sofapaka To Edge Closer To The Title, Leopards Held

KISUMU, Kenya- Leaders Gor Mahia FC beat rivals Sofapaka FC 2-0 at Moi Stadium in Kisumu to stretch their lead to 10 points in the SportPesa Premier League on Sunday.

At the same time, AFC Leopards SC were held to a barren draw by Sony Sugar FC at Awendo Green Stadium in Migori.

Mathare United FC picked a 2-0 walk-over after basement side Mount Kenya United FC failed to turn-up for the fixture at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani in Nairobi.

Zoo Kericho  FC stunned Ulinzi Stars FC 2-1 at Kericho Green Stadium as Tusker FC battled to a 1-1 draw with Nzoia Sugar FC in Ruaraka.

Posta Rangers  FC also shared  spoils with Vihiga United FC in a duel that ended 1-1 at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Samuel Onyango and Jacques Tuyisenge found the back of the net in the 56th and 77th minutes to ensure Gor bagged the deserved victory.

The win saw Gor consolidate their lead at the top on 66 points, ten better than second placed Sofapaka.

Gor head coach, Hassan Oktay said the tactical changes he made in the second half  played a crucial role in the win.

“Every game is very important to us, I told my boys that this match was going to be tough so they prepared for it mentally,” Oktay underlined.

Sofapaka head coach, John Baraza admitted that Gor have already run away with the title and so they are focusing on next season.

“This defeat has handed Gor the trophy, we will focus to return better next term,” Baraza underscored.

“We both had chances in the match but Gor utilised theirs, we failed to capitalised on ours.I also missed my top striker Umar Kasumba  in the game,” Baraza highlighted.
