NAIROBI, Kenya- Tusker FC shot to the top of the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) table on Wednesday afternoon after a hard fought 1-0 victory over newcomers Wazito FC at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Tusker leapfrogged champions Gor Mahia FC and now have 27 points, one ahead of second place Kakamega Homeboyz FC after 13 matches.

The heated encounter got off to a flying start with both teams getting a sniff of goal within the first four minutes of the game.

Wazito forward Elvis Rupia was the most threatening player in the opening half hour with his pacy runs constantly causing a threat to the brewers defence.

By half time the score was still goalless and the floodgates of heaven opened and let out torrential downpour that slowed down the proceedings in the second stanza.

Tusker coach Robert Matano then brought on Sydney Ochieng' and George 'Blackberry' Odhiambo, which seemed to breathe life into the attacking line-up.

In the 71st minute, Odhiambo made an instant impact as his cheeky back heel found David Ambunya who slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to give Tusker a lead they would hold on to for the rest of the game.

"The most important thing is three points and I am glad that we managed to hang on until the end.

"The pitch is in bad condition and that limited our play but I have good players who can always give good performances. I'm proud of the shift they have put in today," Matano told SportPesa News after the match.

Earlier in the day, Homeboyz beat Bandari FC 1-0 at the Bukhungu Stadium courtesy of a Christopher Masinza goal to condemn the dockers to a third defeat in five games.

At the Moi Stadium in Kisumu, Benson Omala bagged a hat-trick as Western Stima FC thrashed Zoo FC 4-1 as they extended their unbeaten streak to shoot up to fourth on the table.

Ulinzi Stars FC also moved up to sixth on the table after a 4-1 beating of basement club Chemelil Sugar FC.

Chemelil remain with only one point this season and look sure to be facing the axe from the top flight this season.
