Portugal secured a spot in the last 16 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Uruguay in a sketchy match at the Lusail Stadium on Monday.

There was really not much to speak of throughout the game with both sides lacking enough quality to break the deadlock.

Uruguay knocked Portugal out of the last 16 four years ago in Russia, courtesy of a double from Edinson Cavani but the scrappy win ensured they got their revenge.

Rodrigo Bentancur made a brilliant first-half run and skipped past the Portuguese defense but saw his effort halted by Portugal keeper Diogo Costa's save.

Nine minutes after the restart, Bruno Fernandes floated a cross toward the goal and his effort flew past Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.

Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the ball had glanced off his head but the goal was eventually given to Fernandes to gift Portugal the lead.

The game was interrupted in the second half by a pitch invader carrying a rainbow flag and wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words 'Save Ukraine' on the front and 'Respect for Iranian woman' on the back.

Portugal wrapped up the win in stoppage time when Fernandes got his second from the spot after a VAR check which adjudged Jose Gimenez had handled the ball.

The defeat means that Uruguay must now beat Ghana in their final Group H game to have a chance of qualifying after the Black Stars beat South Korea earlier in the day.

Portugal have not been past the last-16 stage of a World Cup since 2006 and would take on the runner-up in Group G in the next round if they do finish at the top.
