Ghana gave the whole of Africa a reason to cheer as they battled to an impressive 3-2 victory against South Korea in an exhilarating match at the Education City Stadium.

The five-goal thriller was filled with ups and downs but the Black Stars were solid enough to earn their first win of the tournament.

The victory lifts Ghana to second place in Group H, level with Portugal who are in action later on against Uruguay with a chance to qualify for the knockout stages.

Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu and Ajax's Mohammed Kudus gave Ghana an early lead after a crazy 10-minute spell and they looked on course for an easy victory.

They continued to dominate proceedings until the break and went in two goals to the good, much to the joy of the Ghanaian fans in the stadium.

The second half brought with it so much drama as South Korea got right back into the game through two stunning headers in three minutes from Cho Gue-sung, top-scorer in his domestic league.

But it was Kudus again who was to have the final say when he thumped in a third in the 68th minute for Ghana to break South Korea's hearts.

Chances continued to fall South Korea's way as they searched for another equalizer but, despite 10 minutes of added time, Ghana held on.

Tensions rose after the final whistle and South Korea coach Paulo Bento was sent off for his exaggerated form of expression in dispute to the referee's decision.

South Korea remain bottom of the table with a point, after a barren draw with Uruguay in their opening match, and will battle it out against Portugal in their final group game.

Meanwhile, Ghana will be itching to take on Uruguay in a revenge match after the South Americans notably knocked them out of the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals.

Sulley Muntari put the Black Stars ahead before Diego Forlan equalized in the second half before the penalty drama that also saw Luis Suarez sent off.
