AWENDO, Kenya- Reborn Enock Agwanda made history when he became the first player to win the SportPesa/Sports Journalists of Kenya (SJAK) Player of the Month Award twice and for a second successive time when he collected the August crown at Awendo Green Stadium on Thursday morning.

The Sony Sugar FC forward scored twice and provided as many assists in the month of July beating teammate Tobias Otieno and Bandari FC custodian Farouk Shikhalo to the coveted award, before scoring a whopping four goals and providing two assists in August..

"I want to thank God for enabling me to win this award for a second time. Nobody has ever won it twice since its inception in 2014 and I’m very humbled.

"All the hard work we have put in as a team has paid off and I hope with the remaining games we can continue with our winning mentality to improve on our 10th position,” the lanky ex-Gor Mahia FC striker said oozing with delight.

Agwanda who has notched nine SportPesa Premier League (SPL) goals for the campaign, received KSh100,000 and a 49-inch smart television set with his teammates getting to share, KSh50,000 thanks to his exploits.

Jowi as he is fondly known as by his peers, which translates to ‘buffalo’ in the local Luo dialect, made his intentions clear when his sizzling performances from July trickled into August.

Sony were impressive in August as they continued their resurgence in the SPL having started the season flirting with relegation, winning thrice and drawing once against 2016 title winners Tusker FC.

Purple patch

Agwanda scored once in a 3-1 victory over bottom side Thika United FC before claiming the winner in a 1-0 win upset at Ulinzi Stars FC.

The sturdy forward then turned on the show a week later as he scored a brace to steer Sony to a 2-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks FC.

After the August purple patch the sugar millers and twice former national champion have not won in their last three but will be confident, inspired by the honoring of their forward, of collecting maximum points when they host relegation-threatened Chemelil Sugar FC on Saturday at 3pm local time (+3GMT).

The man of the hour hailed his teammates and Sony boss, Patrick Odhiambo, who took over from Salim Babu for their contribution that saw him enter record books on Thursday.

"The coach is also someone who has enabled me to win this award and I’m grateful for his guidance,” the former Harambee Stars striker added.
