HULL, England- Fraizer Campbell felt the 1-1 draw between Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday was probably a fair result in the end, although he admitted there was some disappointment that the Tigers hadn’t claimed all three points.

Campbell put his side in front at Hillsborough, but a disputed second half penalty brought the Owls level as both sides claimed their first point of the season.

“From where I was stood it just looked like Reece was going to clear the ball and their man just threw himself into Reece,” said Campbell when asked about the penalty.

“It was a bit harsh but those decisions happen through a season and hopefully we’ll get our own further down the line.

“In the first half we were the better side and dominating really, but we could have done with that second goal. They turned it around in the second half but I felt that we dealt with most of their threats pretty well.

“The performance was an improvement from the Villa game and we’ve got a point away from home which is never a bad thing, although the lads are disappointed that we didn’t come away with more.”

For Campbell, it was a first goal of the new campaign and he is pleased to be up and running.

“As a striker it’s always nice to get off the mark,” continued the striker.

“It would have been better if it had been a winning goal but nevertheless it’s good for my confidence to back up a performance with a goal.

“I’ve come back a lot fitter than last season, probably due to playing a lot of games and having a shorter break, and we’ve got a strong regime at the training ground because we want everybody to be available to play as many games as possible.”

Adkins reaction

Although he felt his side could have taken all three points, Head Coach Nigel Adkins was satisfied to see the Tigers get up and running.

“I thought we played really well in the first half and we had some good opportunities,” said Adkins.

"We passed the ball brightly, moved it around really well and we could have scored several goals. We did score a great goal through Campbell – it was a great finish and he’s looking sharp and fit which is great to see.

“Into the second half and for me, it isn’t a penalty but the referee gave it and then Sheffield Wednesday had the momentum in the game. We gave the ball away a little too cheaply and that gave them a chance to build.

“It’s important that we’ve come away with something and on another day it could have been all three points. The energy, work rate and team ethic shown by the players was great and we have to thank the supporters that turned up because we know it wasn’t cheap to come and watch us.

“This is a new team and we’re growing together. To come away from home and deal with some of the things that went against us today is pleasing and some of the football that we played was exciting.

“It’s a first point on the board and that is pleasing because the players worked their socks off.”
