NAIROBI, Kenya- Harambee Stars stand-in captain Michael Olunga expressed his delight after leading his country against Uganda on Sunday in the absence of Tottenham Hotspur FC’s Victor Wanyama.

The Kashiwa Reysol FC striker was the sole attacker as Kenya played out to a 1-1 draw against the Uganda Cranes at the Kasarani Stadium.

It was coach Francis Kimanzi’s first game in charge of the national team during his second stint after taking over from Frenchman Sebastian Migne who resigned early last month.

“It was an honour to captain the Kenya national team (Harambee Stars) for the first time in my career. The boys gave a good account of themselves,” the 25-year old forward stated.

Gor Mahia FC’s captain Kenneth Muguna scored early in the second half to cancel out Emmanuel Okwi’s first half effort to secure a draw for the Kenyans in the friendly.

Despite Olunga not getting on the scoresheet, his presence proved a constant threat to the visitors and he believes that the future of Kenyan football is bright. 

“The future is very positive. I also want to thank the fans for their never-ending support,” Olunga concluded.

The 2018/19 Kenyan Premier League midfielder of the year Francis Kahata was a notable absentee from the line-up, with Kimanzi opting to bring on Whyvonne Isuza instead.

Kariobangi Sharks FC’s Duke Abuya and Boniface Muchiri from Tusker were the other two who made a cameo off the bench for Harambee Stars.
