HOMA BAY, Kenya- If you have never heard about Harambee Stars forward Michael Olunga, there is no better place to hear about him first hand than in his ancestral home in Homa Bay, the last county of all in the country.

The Japan-based forward hails from the football crazy county and he commands so much respect and admiration to the youth who are trying to make a professional career out of their football talent.

George Oyudi, who is an upcoming footballer from the region spoke of the influence of Olunga’s journey is a motivation for him as he continues to pursue a way out through the beautiful game.

Oyudi was speaking during a visit by global technology and entertainment company SportPesa, to hand over 50 boxes of football jerseys donated from their United Kingdom (UK) partners, Everton FC, Southampton FC and Hull City FC.

“This is the best initiative I have ever been fortunate enough to benefit from. Jerseys and boots are the biggest problem we face in this area because we cannot afford them, I’m very grateful for this generous donation.

“The fact that Olunga comes from here is in itself a beacon of hope for the thousands of boys who play football in this region. We will always put in that extra effort because with support, we know we can make it,” Oyudi stated.

Olunga became a modern day hero in Kenyan football during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt when he scored twice to engineer a 3-2 victory over noisy neighbors Tanzania, despite a group stage exit.

The kits initiative is one initiated to be able to provide essentials that the youth cannot get themselves such as boots, jerseys and balls in a continual effort to develop the football in the country from a grassroots level.

“This visit by SportPesa has motivated me and it will be different when I go for training today. More people need to come to our aid and provide such opportunities for the youth.

“Football is a universal language and it is something that can bring people together, they should follow this example to change things,” the 20-year old added.
