KISUMU, Kenya- Jonah Ochieng’ from Seme Constituency revealed his plans to play in the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) in the next couple of years on Wednesday as he and his teammates received kits in their home area.

The 18-year old Ochieng’ was speaking to SportPesa News after his KitMikayi FC side and 35 others received boxes of football jerseys through the unrivaled Kits for Africa campaign courtesy of the global entertainment and technology firm.

The dynamic midfielder who hails from the constituency responsible for the man whose 40-year old Kenyan Premier League goal record is yet to be broken by the heaps of talent that the country continues to produce.

Maurice “Sonyi” Ochieng’ scored 26 goals for Gor Mahia FC in the 1976 season and this is a feat his namesake says acts as motivation for his upcoming career.

“This is a very special day for me and my team, we are very grateful to SportPesa for providing us with jerseys that we can use to play.

“I have hope for a future in football and this has made it even more. In two years, I want to be in the SPL and one day become a hero for my village,” Ochieng’ stated.

The Kits for Africa initiative is one in conjunction with SportPesa’s football partners from the United Kingdom such as Everton FC, Southampton FC and the Tigers from Hull City FC.

Ochieng’, a staunch Gor Mahia fan went ahead to express the need for more people to get involved with development of football in the country if we are to achieve more than just qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Kenya made it to the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt after a 15-year hiatus but could not make it out of the group stage after finishing third in a Group D that berthed both finalists, Senegal and Algeria.

“If we had more people to give us shoes, shirts or even balls then everything would be different in terms of development of football.

“The focus needs to be more on the talent that is already here so we can nurture it if we are going to make an impact on African football,” he added.

The Kits for Africa trail leads to Homabay County on Thursday, July 18 as a further 100 teams are set to receive donations.
