New Design For Kenya Open Venue, Govt Among Sponsors On Board

NAIROBI,Kenya- The par 72 Karen  Country and Country Club scheduled to host 2019 Kenya Open Golf Championship will be arranged to suit both players and spectators.

This was confirmed by Tournament Director, Patrick Obath, who said work is already underway for the new design at the club.

“We have planned the course in such away that supporters will get more room to move freely unlike before when they could block even the participants,” Obath underlined.

“The current 13th hole will be the first tee. Golfers will then play the 14th through the 18th holes, then back to the 10th, 11th and 12th for the first nine contest. They will then cross over to the first tee and play it the normal way,” Obath explained.

At the same time, Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) have unveiled sponsors who have come on board to support this year’s edition slated for March 14 to 17.

The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Tourism as well as the Ministry of Sports, Barclays Bank of Kenya, Kenya Breweries Limited and Hemingways Hotel are some of the confirmed sponsors who were disclosed by KOGL on Monday.

“We believe that the Kenya Open will prominently position Magical Kenya to the global audience through television  broadcast rights that comes with the new status of the tournament,” Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Najib Balala, underscored.

Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Sports and Heritage Amb. Kirimi Kaberia also reiterated the State’s commitment in supporting the growth of golf in the country.

“Last year’s announcement by His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta on the intention to increase the Kenya Open prize money kitty from 1.1 (KSh115 Million)Million Euros to 2.2 Million (KSh230 Million) was a clear indication of this commitment,” Kaberia highlighted.

KOGL Chairman, Peter Kanyago said details of the new sponsorships would be made known in due course.
