Thousands sign online campaign calling on Old Trafford bosses to axe the ex-England defenders who earned new deals last December

LONDON, England- Manchester United FC fans have signed a petition urging the club to axe ex-England defenders Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, British publication The Sun reported.

Thousands of fed up supporters signed the online petition insisting Old Trafford chiefs should be prepared to take a huge hit on players "who wouldn't even be good enough to be on the bench for our rivals".

"But the Old Trafford board shocked pundits and supporters by giving wing-back Young, plus central defenders Smalling and Jones, new deals shortly after Jose Mourinho was sacked last December.

"United faded to a sixth-place finish, having shone under Solskjaer until he was upgraded from caretaker boss to permanent manager in March," The Sun reported.

Now a supporter has launched a change.org petition demanding United - "arguably the biggest club in the world" - sort out "glaringly obvious problems".

The campaign statement argues: "The past six years have been torture for millions of fans who invest their time, energy, emotions and hard-earned money into supporting this once great club.

"We've had to endure not only countless bad results but the football has also been consistently dull & uninspiring to watch.

"There are players in our first team squad who wouldn't even be good enough to be on the bench for our rivals.

"Pep Guardiola's first season at Man City was deemed a failure. He then sold 8 of his players who weren't good enough and went on to win the league with a record number of points the following season.

"If we want to be in the same conversation as the European elites such Barcelona and Real Madrid then we have to ask ourselves: What would Barcelona and Real Madrid do if they had players like Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in their squad?

"Exactly. They would have them removed by any means necessary, even if it meant taking a financial hit," it added.
