NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) RFC flanker Andrew Amonde will captain the Kenya Shujaa squad for the  2019 Africa Men 7s Championship slated for Johanesburg, South Africa on November 8 to 9.

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Technical Director Paul Feeney named a strong 12-man side on Thursday that will ply trade for the country at the tournament that will also act as Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifiers.

“We’re definitely looking forward to reclaim the cup which we lost last year to Zimbabwe. This year’s tournament is equally important as it also turns out to be an Olympic Qualifier,”  Team Manager Erick Ogweno underlined.

“It will be best for us to seal the Tokyo 2020 ticket while in Johannesburg as opposed to proceeding to the repechage. It’s every athlete’s dream to compete at the Olympics,” Ogweno added.

Amonde will be assisted by KCB winger Jacob Ojee and Jeffrey Oluoch while Oscar Dennis, who last featured for the team during the Asian tour, makes a come back alongside Kenya Harlequins winger William Ambaka and Mwamba centre Billy Odhiambo.

The 2018/2019 season star trio of Daniel Taabu, Johnstone Olindi and Vincent Onyala have made the cut to represent the country at the qualifiers together with regulars Bush Mwale, Nelson Oyoo and Alvin Otieno. 

“The preparations have been ideal, I trust the best we’ve had in years and this was topped up by the Safari 7s win for the young lads,” Ogweno quipped.

The competition will feature a total of 14 countries that are ranked as per last year’s results. Kenya is currently second after falling to Zimbabwe in the final held in Tunisia.
