Manchester United got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a horrid start after losing 2-1 to Swiss league winners Young Boys on Tuesday night.

United conceded a stoppage time goal after a Jesse Lingard mistake to condemn them to an opening day loss despite holding on with 10 men for most of the game.

Aaron Wan Bissaka was sent off in the 35th minute for a dangerous challenge on Christopher Martins.

Crisitiano Ronaldo, who became the joint all-time Champions League appearance holder on his 177th appearance in the competition, fired United ahead in the 13th minute.

The goal mean that no player has scored against more different Champions League teams than Ronaldo (36).

"It was a tough game, a tough surface. Away from home, we found ourselves going down to 10 men, [but] we looked comfortable in the game.

"We don't like losing any football match, so we're disappointed tonight of course. But it's matchday one, we've got five more matches to go," Man United captain Harry Maguire stated after the game.

"We’ll be looking to pick up three points in the next game and gain momentum from there. It’s disappointing to lose the first game but there’s a long way to go, we have an objective and we've still got every chance of achieving that objective," he added.

Elsewhere, defending champions Chelsea got off to a winning start with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zenit St. Petersburg at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues struggled to create chances but it was Romelu Lukaku's 69th minute goal that sealed all three points for Thomas Tuchel's side.

The Belgian has scored 4 goals in 4 matches for Chelsea and looks to be a perfect signing for the London club as they look to defend the title they won last season.

Chelsea have won 10 of their last 14 Champions League matches since the start of last season (D3 L1), with only Manchester City (11) winning more games in the competition than themselves over this period.

Barcelona were humiliated at home by a well-oiled Bayern Munich side, scoring 3 goals at the Camp Nou to take charge of Group E.

Thomas Muller scored first before a Robert Lewandowski brace confirmed all three points for the Bavarians.

Former Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata scored one goal and earned a penalty as Juventus launched their Champions League campaign by beating Malmo.

It was Morata's 14th Champions League goal for Juve, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo in fifth on the team's all-time Champions League top scorers list.
