NAIROBI, Kenya- Sony Sugar FC are staring relegation in the eyes after giving away a third walkover of the 2019/20 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season, after failing to honour a fixture against Zoo FC in Kericho on Wednesday afternoon.

The financially constrained sugar millers had earlier in the season given two walkovers to AFC Leopards SC and Tusker FC, with the rules stating that three walkovers a season results in immediate relegation.

"As it stands, Sony have been relegated from the league," KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda stated.

"They still have 48 hours to write to us and explain the reason why they missed the match but under article 4.1.7 it is not acceptable and the consequences are relegation for the rest of the season a demotion to a lower league next season," Oguda explained.

Sony, who were promoted to the top flight in 1993, have won the title once in the 2005/6 season under coach Francis Baraza, a feat that remains top of their Kenyan Premier League highlight reel.

Their only win this season was a 2-1 Nzoia Sugar FC on September 14 and their struggles see them languishing in 17th place with four points after 10 matches.

Only Chemelil Sugar FC trail Sony, as they can only boast one point and remain without a win this season following a 2-0 walkover loss to Kenya Commercial Bank FC (KCB) on Wednesday afternoon.

This means that Chemelil will also be relegated from the league if they miss one more game this season, after a previous walkover handed to SportPesa Shield winners Bandari FC.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, newcomers Kisumu All Stars FC climbed out of the drop zone after a hard fought 2-0 victory over Wazito FC to propel them into 14th with nine points.

A Brian Nyakan goal was enough for Sofapaka FC as they handed Mathare United FC their first loss of the campaign.

The slum boys remain in sixth place with 17 points, whilst Sofapaka are in ninth, three points behind their counterparts.
