NAIROBI, Kenya- Global technology and entertainment company SportPesa continued to show their passion and dedication to football development in the country as they visited Ziwani Estate on Wednesday afternoon to make a Kits For Africa donation.
The admirable initiative launched in 2017 in-conjunction with international football partners such as Everton FC, Hull City FC and Southampton FC aims to provide football kits to football teams across the country.
Tusker FC's prodigal son Humphrey Mieno, who was born and raised in Ziwani, accompanied SportPesa officials as they provided kits to 30 teams from the area which is renown for hosting Kenya's oldest football tournament, Koth Biro.
There is no doubt that Ziwani and impoverished estates just like it are a hub for a huge chunk of the talent that is produced in Kenya and the Kits For Africa campaign continues to provide essentials that can berth a football career for some of the players.
"I have come with my friends from SportPesa today to bring kits to all the teams here today. The fact that they remember upcoming talent from the hood is an indication that there is hope for Kenyan football and I can only expect all of you to get some morale from this initiative," former Gor Mahia midfielder Mieno stated.
Mieno is a beacon of hope to the youth in the area as he rose through similar if not worse conditions and managed to become a successful professional football both at club and national team levels.
Despite the recent turmoil facing Kenyan football clubs and the national team as well, the Kits For Africa campaign trail continued to reiterate the importance of developing grassroots and upcoming players to ensure that there is a bright future for the beautiful game.
"We have never forgotten about you and as long as we have tools that can help teams in training, we will always provide what we can to the teams.
"There are issues facing football in the country but with the donations we have brought today, you should have training kits and I hope it goes a long way in helping you continue to develop your talent," SportPesa's Head of Public Relations Lola Okulo told the players.
Roughly 600 players benefitted from the donation and many of the players at the Umeme Grounds were grateful for the kits and went on to plead for more such initiatives to help save Kenyan football talent from the jaws of depletion.
"This is a great day for us and thank you is not enough to SportPesa. Many people play without proper football attire and that should not be the case.
"If more people would imitate this gesture, there is no doubt that we can take football in this country to the levels it is meant to be at," Brian Ochieng' of Team Umeme offered.
