The men’s national rugby 7s side Shujaa will have a clear shot of successfully defending their Safari 7s title after beating a determined Germany 19-5 to make the main cup final of the 2023 edition of the international tournament.

The Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua coached side were made to work hard for the win as they had to come back from a 0-5 deficit at half time in order to book their spot in the finals where they will face Samurai who delivered a late sucker punch to Uganda following their last minute 21-19 victory.

In what was a repeat clash of the 2021 finale, Bernard Veil opened the scoring for the Germans just before the half time break but an inspired second half performance saw the Kenyans turned the tie on its head by the full time whistle.

Vincent Onyala was the first to kickstart the comeback after showing sheer determination to cut through the German defense before touching down just under the posts to give Shujaa a 7-5 lead following Tony Omondi’s successful conversion.

Omondi would then put his name on the try scoring list as he finished off a team move down the right that extended Kenya’s lead to 12-5.

The fresh legs of Brian Mutugi would give Shujaa further breathing room as he evaded his markers before landing a third try that was well converted to bring the game to a 19-5 full time score, a scoreline that would have extended but Kevin Wekesa’s late try was cancelled.
