NAIROBI, Kenya- After
an action-packed round 20 in the Kenya Premier League (KPL) calendar, league
leaders Gor Mahia FC suffered a third defeat but retained top spot.
A weekend saw 20 goals scored from the eight games played
across the country with teams like Wazito FC and Chemelil Sugar FC registering
massive wins.
Lowly Nzoia Sugar FC also bagged a valuable point against
tough opposition in Ulinzi Stars FC, whilst William Muluya’s Kariobangi Sharks
FC got a fourth win of the 2019/20 campaign.
Following the weekend’s action, SportPesa News dives into
the top performers who make it into the team of the week.
In goal, Brian Bwire
gets the nod for his exemplary performance against Kenya Commercial Bank FC
(KCB). Bwire was on hand to make a couple of key saves, especially when Sharks
were reduced to 10 men, helping them keep a clean sheet.
To lead the back line is another Sharks player in Captain Eric Omondi Juma. Juma’s ability to
hold the ball and seek creative options up front with sublime passing skills
played a very important role in the vital win.
Tusker FC left-back Sammy
Meja’s tireless runs and ability to quickly turn defense into attack was
key in the brewers’ narrow win over AFC Leopards SC, earning him a spot in the
team of the week.
The final defender on the list is Sofapaka’s Willis Obayi, who despite not being a
regular for his side was included in the starting line-up and was solid
throughout the encounter to keep champions Gor at bay.
In a weekend that saw, many midfielders play the vital roles
for their sides, the easiest inclusion has to be Mathare United FC’s Kevin Kimani. The explosive midfielder
scored twice to inspire the slum boys to a 3-1 victory against Zoo FC.
Harambee Stars youthful sensation Musa Masika also debuts in the team after he single-handedly bagged
all three points for Wazito FC in the 94th minute. The win against Western
Stima FC was their first in eight matches.
Victor Likare’s
goal on the stroke of half time proved to be enough for Collins Okoth’s Nzoia
Sugar FC, who can boast a point from their tricky encounter against Ulinzi.
The final midfielder in the team is yet another slum boys
player in James Kinyanjui. The speedy and effective winger put on a major shift and
was aside from a top performance, he also managed to get his name on the
scoresheet.
Patrick Otieno’s fourth goal of the season was
all 10-man Sharks needed to bag all three points against KCB last Friday. A
very important win as the 2019 SportPesa Cup winners try to turn their season
around.
Nigerian import Promise
Chinonso announced his arrival into the Kenyan top flight in fine fashion
as his brace inspired Sofapaka’s sweet revenge against Gor last Saturday.
Chinonso scored his first two goals for his new club, showing lots of promise
for the future.
Last but not least, Timothy
Otieno of Tusker FC. His target of
18 goals in the league continued to look more likely as he bagged his 11th of
the campaign in a dramatic 1-0 win against AFC Leopards SC on Sunday at the
Afraha Stadium.
