Murang’a Seal announced the appointment of Ezekiel Akwana as their new head coach following a 3-1 friendly defeat against AFC Leopards on Sunday.

The former Kenyan international takes over from Vincent Nyaberi, who the club confirms will remain as his assistant coach.

Nyaberi led Seal to an impressive 3rd place finish in last season’s National Super League, before losing the promotion two-legged playoff to Wazito FC.

“I’m very pleased to have been given this opportunity to be the new coach at this brilliant club and I am eager to give a good account of myself.

“I want to thank the president for believing in me and allowing me the chance to come and help with our shared vision for Murang’a Seal,” Akwana told SportPesa News.

The home side took an early lead at the St. Sebastian Park through a Dennis Wabwire penalty to make for a perfect start to the game.

Though the lead did not last long as Ronald Shichenje hustled in the penalty area before slotting the ball into the corner to level matters.

Seal goalkeeper Wilson Ngamau was called into action a couple of times, but he was on hand to produce scintillating saves to keep his side in the match.

After the break, both sets of coaches made changes to their squads that seemed to change the course of the game with Leopards going ahead through a Jaffary Odeny effort.

It was not until the dying embers of the game that Victor Otieno scored from a free kick to gift Ingwe the victory.

“I have watched the boys play today and technically they are gifted. With the inclusion of my tactics, I am confident that they will only get better.

“There are just a few things we need to fix and with the facilities we have here, there is no reason why we should not be a top flight club,” the former Mathare United coach stated.

Akwana stepped down as Mathare coach earlier in the year due to financial strains at the club that led to a string of poor results.

Prior to that, Akwana had been the coach of Kenya Premier League side Sofapaka as well as an assistant coach at KCB FC.

“I am pleased with what I have seen today against a seasoned KPL side and if we keep up the attitude we displayed today, we will battle for top honors.

“Nyaberi is a good coach and has brought this team up, I look forward to working together with him as we strive to make Seal one of the biggest teams in the land,” he concluded.

Seal beat Ping FC 5-0 in another friendly last Thursday, a week after they went down 1-0 to KPL side Nairobi City Stars.

They are set to play at least one more pre-season friendly as they continue preparations for the new season.
