Mateiko leads Kenyan men to clean sweep as women disappoint in RAK half marathon

Daniel Kibet Mateiko, the man who pushed the late Kelvin Kiptum to break the world record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, has conquered Qatar.

Mateiko produced a monstrous performance at the 2024 Ras AL Khaimah (RAK) Half marathon which was held in the Gulf nation earlier on Saturday.

He stopped the clock in a promising time of 58:45 as Kenyan road race runners swept the podium clean.

Mateiko was followed by John Kipkosgei Korir, who is the younger brother to the former Cherangany Member of Parliament Wesley Korir, and Isaia Kipkoech Lasoi with the duo clocking 58:50 and 58:55 respectively.

Other Kenyan male participants in the race Bernard Koech (59:42) and Amos Kurgat Kibiwot (59:51) settled for fifth and eighth positions respectively.

In the women’s category, Kenyan women were shown dust by their East African rivals. Ethiopia’s Tsigie Gebreselama won the coveted title in 1:05:14 ahead of his compatriot and pre-race favorite Ababel Yeshaneh who crossed the finishing line in 1:05.44.

The third-place position went to Tanzania’s Jackline Juma Sakilu who clocked 1:06.04, 27 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Margaret Chelimo. 

Chelimo was followed by her fellow countrywomen Evaline Chirchir (1:06.36), Catherine Reline (1:06.49), and Peres Jepchirchir (1:07.19).

The race winners in each category pocketed $15000 (approximately Ksh 2,150,649) with the money expected to be subjected to the tax procedure.

More than 40 elite runners from different parts of the country took part in the 17th edition of the race which was staged at AL Marjan Island.
