There was nothing to separate the English Premier League title contenders as Manchester City and Liverpool played out to a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The game was nothing short of enthralling from the get go and with the spoils shared, Pep Guardiola's side maintain their one-point gap at the summit.

Billed as one of the biggest matches in Premier League history, between two of the finest sides English football has seen, the contest lived up to the hype.

Kevin De Bruyne's deflected effort off Joel Matip gave the hosts the lead within the opening five minutes but Diogo Jota brought the reds level six minutes later.

This was Jota's fourth goal in four consecutive domestic matches, making Jurgen Klopp's decision to start him over both Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz apparent, with his 15th of the season.

The home side were back in front less than 10 minutes before half time when Joao Cancelo picked out Jesus, who lifted the ball over Alisson from the edge of the six-yard box.

Drama continued within seconds of the restart as Mohamed Salah found his African counterpart Sadio Mane who marked his 30th birthday with a sublime finish past Ederson.

"It was like a boxing fight. You have your arms down for a second and get a massive knock and you shake a little.

"It was a great game and a result which we have to live with and can live with," Klopp said after the pulsating contest.

Substitute Riyad Mahrez had a glorious chance to win the match in the last seconds of stoppage time but lifted his shot agonizingly over the bar.

City remain top with 74 points, one ahead of their rivals with only seven games left to play in the 2021/22 season of the English Premier League.
