Jurgen Klopp's woes continued as Liverpool were thrashed 4-1 by Napoli in their UEFA Champions League opener on Wednesday at the Armando Diego Maradona Stadium.

The reds who have not had a perfect start and sit in 7th place in the English Premier League, were humiliated in a night they would love to forget.

Napoli cruised to a 3-0 half-time lead that could have even been more but Alisson Becker did well to save Victor Osimhen's penalty in the 18th minute.

Piotr Zielinski had put the hosts ahead from the spot in the 5th minute, before Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone extended Napoli's lead.

Zielinski got his second shortly after the second half began and Luis Diaz's 49th minute consolation goal was all that Liverpool could manage.

The victory leaves Napoli in second place in Group A, behind leaders Ajax who ran riot against Scottish side Rangers in a 4-0 demolition earlier in the night.

The Europa League runners-up were outclassed thanks to goals from Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis, Mohammed Kudus and Steven Bergwijn.

This was Rangers' second 4-0 defeat in a few days after they went down to Scottish champions Celtic over the weekend.

Liverpool's next European assignment is a home match against the free-scoring Dutch champions, while Napoli will be away at Rangers.
