Kiptum’s foreign manager vows to give all earnings to young family left behind

Belgian international Marc Corstjens, who managed Kelvin Kiptum’s affairs, has promised to support the late runner’s family.

Corstjens made his intentions clear during a visit to the family of the deceased in Chepsamo, Elgeyo/Marakwet County.

The head of Golazo Management has assured Kiptum’s loved ones that no one will steal what rightfully belongs to the late runner.

“About outstanding payments, don’t worry. Everything is there. It is noted down. And we will share it with the family,” he explained.

Corstjens further revealed intentions to set up a foundation in honor of the athlete who set the current marathon world record of 2:00.35 at the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. 

“It is the duty and the respect that we have for the athlete and his coach. These are terrible circumstances and we can’t let them down. 

We are thinking about establishing a foundation to support young children through basic education all the way to university in honour of departed Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana,” he commented.

Kiptum died on the spot alongside his long-time friend and coach Gervais Hakizimana a week ago after the car they were traveling in reportedly lost control and hit a tree along the Eldoret-Kaptagat road.

Sharon Kosgei, the only survivor of the horrific accident, recently told investigators that Kiptum was in the driving seat when the car lost control.

The body of Hakizimana has already been airlifted to Rwanda while Kiptum’s burial is expected to take place on 24 February.

The two have been mourned by thousands of athletics lovers across the world. Competitors at the 2024 Zurich Seville Marathon which was held on Sunday, February 18 held a moment of silence before the start of the race in Kiptum’s honor.

Besides the late Kiptum, Corstjens also manages a number of Kenyan runners including U20 1500m world record holder Reynold Cheruiyot, Edinah Jebitok, Mary Moraa, Collins Kipruto and Cornelius Tuwei.

He also oversees the affairs of the reigning 3000m steeplechase champion Winfred Yavi who switched her allegiance to Bahrain.
