Kenya once
again maintained its dominance over East African rivals Uganda as the country’s
rugby legends secured the bragging rights over their counterparts following a
31-12 victory in the return leg played at the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday
evening.
Having beaten
the Ugandans 6-38 in the first leg played back in March, tries from Oliver Mang’eni,
Collins Injera, Eddie Omondi, George Mbaye and Victor Sudi saw the Kenyan icons
complete the double over Uganda to clinch the SportPesa Legends Cup.
It was an
affair that promised classic rugby between the two sides and the Kenyan
contingent ended up producing even more as they rolled back the years to
triumph over the noisy neighbours.
Former KCB RFC
player Mang’eni opened the scoring for Kenya as he touched down inside the
opening ten minutes after a well worked move down the left wing that ended with
former Shujaa captain Andrew Amonde giving him the final pass before his
finish.
Lavin Asego
then nailed the conversion to hand the Kenya Legends a 7-0 lead.
With five
minutes to go before the half time break, Kenya’s all-time top try scorer
Injera transported fans back to his heydays as he broke clear from his own 22m
line as he charged towards the Ugandan try line.
But unlike
his previous days where he would be untouched, the rugby ace ran out of steam
as the retreating Ugandans managed to catch up. Their efforts were however in
vain as Kenya managed to recycle the ball which fell kindly to Injera who
touched down just near the posts to extend the team’s lead to 14-0 following a
successful conversion.
Straight
from restart, Kenya extended their lead as captain Omondi touched down at the
corner after fending off challenge from his marker in a move that saw the hosts
lead 19-0 at the break as the conversion missed for the first time.
Uganda came
out in the second half a much better side as they scored two tries that cut
down the deficit to 19-12 but two late tries from George Mbaye and Victor Sudi
completed the emphatic victory for Kenya.
