NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya national sevens team suffered their first defeat at the ongoing 2019/20 HSBC World Series leg in Cape Town, falling 17-5 to the hosts South Africa on Sunday afternoon.

Shujaa went into the game unbeaten after beating both Samoa and Australia in Pool D, before playing out to a thrilling 24-24 draw with Ireland to qualify for the Main Cup quarters in style.

The Kenyans began the quarterfinal on the front foot and were first to score a try through Alvin Otieno, that was to be the only points of the game.

The Blitzbokkes were pacy throughout the second half and managed to score three tries to put them through to the semis, looking to make it two in a row after an opening victory in Dubai last week.

The series will move to the Oceania legs with the next stop the Wellington Sevens in New Zealand from January 25 and Australia the week after.
