SUMMARY
  • Kabras failed to make the main cup semis following their 5-12 loss against Menengai Oilers.
  • KCB beat Mwamba 33-7 to book their last 4 spot.
  • The two results saw KCB automatically clinch the SportPesa 7s Crown due to the insurmountable points difference.

It was not how KCB RFC imagined they would win the overall SportPesa National Sevens 2023 Crown. But that will be the least of their concerns.

This is after closest challengers Kabras Sugar RFC shot themselves in the foot when they failed to progress to the main cup semis following a debilitating 5-12 loss against Menengai Oilers, handing the title to KCB without even fighting owing to the insurmountable points difference.

Having confirmed their semifinal spot with a commanding 33-7 win against Mwamba in the Kabeberi 7s main cup quarter finals, the Bankers sat back and watched as their perennial rivals took to the pitch in the last quarter final against Oilers.

At that point, the situation was straight forward for the table-topping Kabras (92) who had a one-point advantage over KCB (91) – win and maintain your quest for a first overall 7s title in six years.

The sugarmen however failed to rise to the occasion, conceding two tries – one converted and one unconverted – as they trailed 0-12.

They reduced the deficit with one unconverted try, bringing the scores to 5-12. But that would be the end of their fight as they fell short of making the promised land that lay beyond the match.

As they dropped to the ground, some crying while others fighting back tears at what unfolded, KCB jumped in the other corner at the sight of their fourth national sevens crown and a first since 2019.

The result meant that Kabras can only finish as high as fifth place which returns a maximum of 13 points.

On the other hand, the lowest KCB can finish is fourth which accrues 15 point.

With only one point the difference before the Kabeberi 7s, KCB now automatically clinch the SportPesa National 7s Crown without breaking too much sweat.
