Gor Mahia FC coach Steven George Pollack has assured the K’Ogalo faithful that
he is here to work and finish first after he was unveiled as Hassan Oktay’s
successor on Thursday afternoon.
The English-Finnish coach joins the record domestic league
winners on a two-year contract after leaving his post as head coach of Ghanaian
giants Asante Kotoko FC.
Pollack takes over from Turkish-Cypriot Hassan Oktay who had
initially requested a five-day compassionate leave to deal with personal
matters in the United Kingdom before resigning on Tuesday evening.
Oktay left after only a season-long stay in Kenya, in which
he defended the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) title before guiding Gor to the
quarterfinals of the CAF Confederations Cup for the first time in their
history.

“I want to thank the chairman and the club for inviting me
to be the coach of such a big and respected club. This is not my first time
trying to come here and I am glad that I have finally gotten the opportunity.
“I will show my appreciation with the work that I do. I just
want to assure everyone that I am not here on holiday, I have come to work,”
Pollack stated.
Club chair Ambrose Rachier also officially unveiled Pollack’s
assistant Patrick Odhiambo, who joined Gor from Sony Sugar FC a month ago,
following the resignation of club legend Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno.
In addition to the technical bench, Gor also officially unveiled
16 new players who are joining the first team to bolster their squad ahead of
the upcoming SPL season set to kick off on Friday, August 30.
Six of the players are from the Gor youth team, plus a
couple from Sony Sugar FC, two from Western Stima FC and one from National
Super League (NSL) side Nairobi Stima.
Two others join from the Tanzanian Premier League and Gislain
Yikpe from Ivory Coast and Ghanaian Francis Afriyie who joins from the Mexican
league.

“I always want to be number one and that has not changed now
that I am in Kenya. I am sure all my players, both new and old want to be
winners and with hard work we will be able to achieve it,” Pollack underlined.
