Kiyeng's bronze medal was Kenya's third medal at the Olympics, during an edition that has not seen the best from the usually dominant East African nation.

The race was won by Ugandan Peruth Chemutai who clocked a time of 9:01.45, ahead of silver medalist Courtney Frerichs who clocked 9:04.79.

Kiyeng finished in a time of 9:05.39.

The other Kenyan in the race Beatrice Chepkoech, who is also the world record holder, faded away and had to settle for a seventh place finish in 9:16.33.

Later on in the day, Kenyan duo of Ferguson Rotich and Emmanuel Korir will take to the field for the 800m final.

There is loads lying on them as Kenyans hang on to the hope of extra medals to add to their tally.
