Gor Mahia’s planned friendly against Tanzania’s Azam cancelled

The game that was to pit record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia against Tanzanian outfit Azam FC this Sunday 19 November 2023 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani will not take place as initially planned.

This is after the 20-time Kenyan champions confirmed that the international friendly was called off after the country’s Football Kenya Federation declined to give authorization for the match to take place.

“We regrettably wish to inform you that the above planned International friendly match that was to be played in Nairobi on Sunday 19th November 2023 is now officially cancelled.

This is due to the fact that Football Kenya Federation has declined to give authorization for the match to take place.

We regret any inconvenience caused by this. We will look forward to further engagement in future,” a statement signed by the club’s Chief Executive Officer Raymond Oruo confirmed.


The news comes just one day after the record Kenyan champions were slapped with a fine of Kshs. 1,995,000 as the cost of damages their fans left at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani following their barren draw against Murang’a Seal last weekend.

In that match, a section of fans from the 20-time Kenyan champions stormed the pitch in protest of the officiating before chaotic scenes unfolded between them and security personnel who were forced to use teargas canisters to calm the situation.

During that confrontation, some rowdy fans destroyed seats at the stadium and engaged in a tussle with the security personnel.

After an audit of the damages, Sports Kenya, who are in charge of managing sporting facilities in the country, handed the fine to Gor Mahia who were also the home team for the match.
