NAIROBI, Kenya- SportPesa
Premier League (SPL) champions Gor Mahia FC were knocked out of the CAF
Champions League on Sunday after a 2-0 loss to USM Alger at the Kasarani
Stadium.
The defeat means that the Kenyan giants have been relegated
to the CAF Confederations Cup following a 6-1 aggregate loss to the Algerian
outfit.
This is the third season in a row that Gor have been bundled
out of Africa’s richest club competition and will now aim to qualify for the
Confed Cup after a two-legged qualifier.
Two early goals by Aimen Mahious were enough to send the
visitors to the group stages of the Champions League where they are assured of
at least KSh 55million.
Mahious dented the Kenyans hearts immediately after kick-off
with a third minute effort that Peter Odhiambo in the K’Ogalo goal could not do
much about, before scoring a second 12 minutes later.
Nicholas Kipkirui got the best chance for the hosts in the 17th
minute but the former Zoo FC striker was denied and could only settle for a
corner.
The visitors dominated proceedings in the second half and
held on for the famous away victory.
Gor will now attempt to qualify for the CAF Confed Cup group
stages, a continental competition where they made it to the knockout phase last
year for the first time in the clubs history.
