NAIROBI, Kenya- Record Kenyan League winners Gor Mahia FC reclaimed top spot on Sunday afternoon after a plucky 1-0 win against Wazito FC at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Gor had lost top spot status earlier in the day after Tusker FC completely swept aside Chemelil Sugar FC in a 7-0 thrashing.

Despite having two games in hand, K'Ogalo are at the top of the log with 32 points, one ahead of second place Tusker after getting their new year off to the perfect start.

Charles Momanyi was the unlikely goal-scoring hero for Steve Pollack's charges with a header on the hour mark following an assist from reliable captain Kenneth Muguna.

Momanyi would have had a second moments later but he failed to keep his calm and blasted the ball over the frame of the goal from close range.

A late Lawrence Juma goal was also ruled out for offside sparking controversy as the referee seemed to have made the wrong decision but it was too little too late as Gor held on for the slim victory.

The defeat, a fourth straight for Wazito, leaves them languishing in 13th lace with 11 points, just three above the dreaded relegation zone.

In another KPL fixture on the day, Mathare United FC and Kenya Commercial Bank FC (KCB) played out to a 1-1 draw.

James Kinyanjui opened the scoring for the slum boys but an Enock Agwanda penalty restored parity for the visitors who remain in fifth place after the days games.

Mathare are in ninth place with 21 points, five less than their opponents.
