Giants fall as new schools are crowned champions in Term One Games

Only two teams managed to defend their titles in the school games.

Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term One games came to a conclusion on Saturday, April 13 with new names being crowned as champions.

In the just concluded event staged at the Machakos School, only Butere Girls High School and Musingu Boys High School retained their titles.

Butere beat Nairobi champions Buruburu Girls in the finals to secure a narrow 49-43 win in the girls' basketball category.

"Everyone knew that Butere was the team to beat. The other time we played but things didn't just work for us but today we prayed and we thank God for the win," Vincent Musime, Butere Girls coach stated.

In the boys' basketball category, Dr. Aggrey High School from the coast region overwhelmed Agoro Sare from Nyanza in a narrow 56-54 win.

"You may recall that in the first preliminary sections, we played against the same team and lost to them narrowly. Today the same story was repeated and we have won just by a whisker," Dr Aggrey School Principal Robert Aran stated.

"I dedicate this win to the Coast region who have been very supportive to the team as we prepared to come to the nationals," Aran added.

Moi Girls Kamusinga from Western were crowned the handball champions after thrashing Machakos-based Kwanthanze 24-13.

In the boys' category, St Luke's Kimilili from the Western region snatched the title from defending champions Hospital Hill from Nairobi after registering a 21-15 win.

In the rugby 15s, Homeboys All Saints from the Eastern region stole the crown from previous holders Butula from Western in a narrow 12-10 win.

"This year we had resolved that we must win this title after reaching the finals last year," All Saints coach Benson Mwenda stated.

Musingu Boys High School from Western was the only other team that defended its title in the secondary school games after they overpowered their archrivals St Anthony Boys Kitale 3-2 in the hockey finals.

Elsewhere, defending champions Nyamira Girls High School relinquished their title to Tigoi Girls in the girls' hockey finals. Tigoi were crowned hockey winners after a 2-1 win over last year's champions Nyamira.

Speaking after the finals, organizers congratulated the new winners indicating that they raised the standards of the game. They also lauded the coaches for training the schools who demonstrated professionalism throughout the term one games staged in Machakos County.

Top three winners in each category will represent the country in the East African school games set to take place in August.
