Emmanuel Wanyonyi to face big names in Rabat as Conseslus Kipruto returns

Kenya’s fast rising 800 metre ace Emmanuel Wanyonyi will headline the 2024 Rabat Diamond League meeting slated for May 19 in Morocco as he continues his preparations for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The teenager will come up against former world champion Emmanuel Korir and Wycliffe Kinyamal.

Some of the other runners who are set to assemble at the starting line include Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela, United States’ Ben Patterson and home boy Moad Zahafi.

Great Britain’s Daniel Rowden, French runner Ludovic Le Meur, and Spain’s Adrian Ben will also be in contention.

Meanwhile, a number of Kenyan athletes including the decorated Conseslus Kipruto, Amos Serem, Benjamin Kigen and Abraham Kibiwott have been confirmed for the 3000m steeplechase race.

Kipruto, who won the 2019 world title in Qatar, is making a return after being out of competition for a long time.

The Kenyan steeplechasers will battle out for the title with the likes of the recently crowned Doha Diamond League winner Samuel Firewu of Ethiopia and the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games champion Soufiane El Bakkali.

Elsewhere, the Kenyan duo of Vincent Kibet Keter and Boaz Kiprugut will race in the 1500m while Edinah Jebitok, Lilian Kasait and Esther Chebet are expected to carry Kenya’s flag in the 5000m race.

Kasait, who has had a strong start to the 2024 season, confirmed her participation via a brief social media post.

“After a successful hunt at the National Prisons Service Athletics Championships, I turn my focus to the Rabat leg of the 2024 Diamond League on May 19 in the Moroccan City.

I will field in the 5000m. Be ready to cheer us,” read the statement from the speedster, who trains in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
