Captain Wanyama Promises CS Amina An AFCON Performance To Savour

Kenya skipper posted pledge on Twitter after the minister paid their training camp in France a visit on Sunday

PARIS, France- Harambee Stars captain, Victor Wanyama promised the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Heritage, Ambassador Amina Mohammed that they will seek to deliver a performance worthy of the support the Government has put into the team at the 2019 CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

This was after the minister visited their training camp in France on Sunday where she was conducted on a tour of the French Rugby Federation facility where the national football team is fine tuning their preparations for the biannual continental showpiece.

The Tottenham Hotspur FC midfielder who netted the winner from the spot when Stars beat Mauritius 1-0 on Friday in an international friendly, took to his Twitter account after the CS reportedly gave it her vote of confidence according to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

"Thank you Ambassador Amina Mohammed for visiting the team today (Sunday). We thank you for your continued support and we promise to do the best when we travel to Egypt for the African Cup of Nations," the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League silver winner wrote.

“I had a session with the players. They are very pleased with the facility, the arrangements as well as the support they are getting from the management. We are happy that it is money well spent.

Surprise visit

"We have a lot to do in terms of funding federations as well as infrastructure development. My visit here is an eye-opener.

"I have learned a lot of what needs to be put in place for a team to have the support that it needs to participate in championships,” the minister who paid the team a surprise visit on Thursday ahead of their friendly was quoted saying by the FKF website.

The long-serving envoy urged the players to leave a legacy when they play in their first AFCON in 15 years in her address.

“We will endeavor to do even more for our national teams for as long as we have the support,” FKF President, Nick Mwendwa remarked.

Stars will play their second pre-AFCON friendly match against the Democratic Republic of Congo slated next Saturday (June 15) in Madrid, Spain before their departure to Cairo on June 19.

The national football side will feature in their first AFCON Group C match against Algeria on June 23 at the 30th June Stadium.

They will then face cross border rivals Tanzania and Senegal to complete their group stage assignments with French head coach, Sebastian Migne out to lead the country past the preliminary round for the first time in history at the expanded 24-team continental showpiece.
