Kenya's Lawrence Cherono won a men's race that came down to the wire in 2:05:45 -- barely edging Ethiopia's Dejene Debela who was second in 2:05:46 with another Ethiopian, Asefa Mengstu, third in 2:05:48. NAIROBI, Kenya- Boston Marathon winner Lawrence Cherono will defend his title next year after organisers confirmed that he will be part of the athletes set to participate on April 20, 2020. 

The eight-time marathon winner won this year's edition of the race, edging Lelisa Dedisa by two seconds. 

Dedisa has also been confirmed as one of the elite athletes set to challenge for the coveted marathon title alongside 2017 winner, Kenya's Godfrey Kirui. 

"Boston will always have a very special place in my heart. 

"I enjoyed every mile of this race and did my absolute best to hang on to the end of the race and become part of the elite family to have won the most prestigious race in the world," Cherono stated.

In the women's race, 2017 winner Edna Kiplagat and Caroline Rotich will lead the frontline as they challenge Ethiopia's Worknesh Degefa, who is the current champion. 

"The Boston Marathon has always been the most motivating race on my schedule. I hope to stand on the starting line as the first American woman to have made three Olympic Marathon teams," said home girl Des Linden, who will be the star attraction for the United States of America.
