NAIROBI, Kenya- Mathare United FC continued their impressive start to the 2018/19 SportPesa Premier League (SPL) campaign with a 3-0 victory over 10-man Nzoia Sugar FC on Saturday afternoon at the Bukhungu Stadium in Machakos.

The match was the first of a double-header at the revamped stadium and Collins Wakhungu of Nzoia was given his marching orders in the 26th minute before Cliff Nyakeya put the Slum Boys ahead a minute later.

Mathare continued to dominate the rest of the first half but failed to get a second by the time the referee blew for halftime.

The Francis Kimanzi-coached side began the second half just as they had left the first and their efforts paid off in the 53rd when Andrew Juma got his name on the scoresheet.

Chrispin Oduor put the game well beyond Nzoia six minutes later when he found the back of the net for a 3-0 advantage, taking them to six points from two matches without conceding a single goal.

Vihiga United FC maintained their unbeaten start to the new SPL season after playing out to a 1-1 draw with Chemelil Sugar FC.

Vihiga opened the scoring in the 17th through Spetember/October Player of the Month Amos Kigadi and held on to the lead until seven minutes from full time when the home side got an equalizing goal to secure their first point of the season.

First title

Vihiga dropped a spot to third place with four points and will remain there until the rest of the SPL fixtures are played on Sunday.

In the second match played at Bukhungu, Kakamega Homeboyz were in fine form as they dispatched AFC Leopards 3-0 to move up to second in the standings, level on points with leaders Mathare.

Peter Thiong’o broke the deadlock in the 13th, a lead they held on to until the break.

The second half had more chances than the first and it was Homeboyz who found the back of the net yet again in the 66th through a Maxwell Ravel effort.

George Mandela added a third with a quarter of an hour left in the match and the Paul Nkata side maintained the pace until the full time whistle.

Leopards who were under the tutelage of  Marko Vasiljevic are now in 13th place with a point to their name and will need to bounce back if they are to achieve their quest to win a first league title in 20 years.
