South African broadcast giant to beam January 22 to 27 tournament live when action kicks off at National Main Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam

DAR-ES-SALAAM, Tanzania- South African broadcast giants SuperSport announced Monday the acquisition of live telecast rights as the official pay television partner of the 2019 SportPesa Cup (SP Cup) that runs from Sunday to January 27 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

The tournament will feature eight teams – four each from Kenya and Tanzania- playing in a knockout format for the trophy, USD30,000 in cash and the prized opportunity to host English Premier League side Everton FC later this year.

East African football giants, arch-rivals Simba SC and Young Africans (Yanga) SC from Tanzania and two-time champions and holders Gor Mahia FC and their bitter enemies AFC Leopards SC will once again put their might on the line during the week-long football competition.

Singida FC and Mbao FC complete the Tanzanian corner with SportPesa Shield domestic Kenyan cup crown holders Kariobangi Sharks FC and Bandari FC who finished second to Gor in the SportPesa Premier League last term rounding off the visiting teams.

Huge Success

SuperSport will beam all the matches live on SuperSport 9 (DStv Channel 209) and DStv Bomba the lowest package, giving millions Tanzanians an opportunity to enjoy one of the most fiercely contested regional football tournaments.

Across the border in Kenya, the SP Cup matches will be available on SuperSport 9 on the same DStv Channel and the bargain GOtv.

“Since the launch of the tournament three years ago, SportPesa Cup has enjoyed huge success and at the same attracting hundreds of fans across East Africa considering the winner has been playing with one of the greatest clubs in English football –Everton FC. 

“For that reason, we have decided to partner with DSTv through SuperSport in order to give our tournament a wide viewership for it will be attracting viewers from all over the world,” SportPesa Tanzania Director of Administration and Compliance Tarimba Abbas hailed.

“This is a big move as our players will be able to display their soccer skills hence attract soccer scouts around the world. 

“I call upon participating teams to field their best players because apart from getting exposure ahead of their international and premier matches, the players will have an opportunity to showcase their skills,” Abbas charged.

The tournament formally known as the SportPesa Super Cup was inaugurated in Tanzania in 2017 where the winner Gor played against Everton in at the National Main Stadium in Dar on the Blues’ first ever tour to East Africa. 

Last year the lakeside Kenyan town of Nakuru hosted the second edition where Gor retained their crown and became the first team from this regional to play Everton at Goodison Park in England last November.

Losing finalists will receive USD 10,000, the third finisher pockets USD 7,500 and the fourth-placed side taking home USD 5,000. All teams knocked out in the quarter finals will receive USD 2,500 each.
