NAIROBI, Kenya- SportPesa
FC battled to a 3-1 penalty shoot-out victory against Ghetto Radio FC on
Thursday evening in a friendly match in honour of James Odour, popularly known
as Odu Cobra.
Odu Cobra was a banter-loving football enthusiast who was a
familiar and welcome face in the local football fraternity until his untimely passing
on Tuesday, January 15 following a terrorist attack at the Dusit D2 hotel
complex in Nairobi.
The game staged at the Loreto Convent Valley Road (LCVR)
grounds brought together many of Odu Cobra’s friends and colleagues, who got
together to honor their fallen soldier by playing the sport that he loved the
most.
Neither of the sides managed to break the deadlock
throughout the 90 minutes, prompting the game to be decided via a penalty shoot-out.
SportPesa FC captain Joe Sakwa, his assistant Andrew
Longilai and last season’s Left Foot Division 5 joint-top scorer Allan Ballo
were on target for the hosts as they emerged 3-1 winners on the day.
“The game today was in memory of a great man and I am sure
he would be proud of each and every one of us,” Sakwa stated.
“We all knew the type of person Cobra was and in that faith,
we have to celebrate a life well lived.
“We thank God that the game went well with no injuries and
whether it’s on or off the pitch, we pledge our continued support,” he assured.
Odu Cobra was key in the SJAK/LG partnership for the monthly football award and was a freelance journalist with his own channel, Wadau TV.
Heartfelt condolences
Ghetto Radio FC skipper, Paul ‘Polosa’ Ojenge, despite being
disheartened by the news of his friends demise demonstrated respectable
leadership qualities as he spoke highly of the deceased after the game.
“It’s very sad that we are here without Cobra, who was
actually meant to come and play this game.
“Though it’s God’s plan and the best we can do now is to keep
his memory alive by continuing his legacy. I’m grateful for the time we had and
for everyone that is helping us during this trying time,” Ojenge underlined.
Both teams came together after the entertaining game of
football and shared a few memories of Odu Cobra before closing the occasion with
a word of prayer.
“The game has been great today and despite the loss, it was
for a good cause and we all had fun. We are all grateful for the support and we
look forward to a rematch in the near future,” Ojenge added.
