KAKAMEGA, Kenya- Kakamega Homeboyz FC returned to winning ways and climbed to eighth on the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) table after beating Mathare United FC 2-1 at the Bukhungu Stadium.

The match was the only one of the day, with most teams being in SportPesa Shield action over the weekend and Mathare have now gone game three consecutive games without a win.

The defeat means that the slum boys are in fourth place with 31 points, seven more than Homeboyz.

SPL top scorer Allan Wanga and in-form striker Maxwell Ravel were both on target for the Nicholas Muyoti side to cancel out James Kinyanjui’s early opener.

Wanga’s 22nd equalizer was his ninth of the season, one ahead of Ulinzi Stars FC forward Enosh Ochieng’.

Kinyanjui got Mathare off to a flying start with a great finish into the top left corner after combining well with Cliff Nyakeya, who was returning following a one-match suspension.

Despite having more of the chances on goal, it just was not to be for the visitors as Wanga lobbed the ball over Allan Owiny to make it 1-1 before Ravel put the home side ahead 11 minutes with an almost similar finish.

Kinyanjui continued to be the biggest threat for Mathare but the final ball was lacking and they could not find a way back into the game.

Wanga was booked on the hour mark for a late challenge on his former Tusker FC teammate James Situma but it did nothing to destabilize the team as they did well to contain their opponents.

Substitute Edwin Lavatsa had the last chance after Moses Mudavadi picked him out with a delightful pass but the forward could not direct his header as it went inches wide.

Both teams will have a 10-day league break before Homeboyz face an uphill task away to Bandari FC while Mathare will host Posta Rangers FC.
