SOUTHAMPTON, United Kingdom- Oriol Romeu believes the work the players conducted on Southampton's training camp in Tenerife will prove extremely valuable in what will be a huge few months for the team.

Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl took his squad to the Spanish island for five days this week, as he put them through some intense on-pitch sessions and a series of team and individual meetings to prepare them for the final 12 games of the season.

After the disappointment of losing at home to Cardiff in their last outing – a result that saw Saints slip back into the bottom three – Romeu felt the opportunity for the players to spend some significant time together and to work in a different environment was of benefit.

"It's been all hard work, but things that needed to be done and things that we needed to do," said the midfielder.

"They have been good training sessions, good exercises and I'm sure they will help us for the next matches.

"We've enjoyed great conditions, great facilities, and it's been good to be away also for a few days and to be able to work long hours as a team, with some double sessions, so it's been very positive and now we're looking forward to getting back and getting everything into the team as soon as possible,” Romeu added.

"This was probably needed to get our heads away and have some time away from our normal zone.

"Now these next few months are going to be very demanding from all different aspects. It's going to be tough until the end of the season, the situation isn't the best, but we feel very positive and we are really looking forward to this next challenge and what's coming ahead," he stated.

One notable aspect of the trip was Hasenhüttl's decision to meet with each player individually and show them clips of both their best and worst moments under him, and Romeu said the players found that a particularly valuable process.

"It's very good to have the manager being honest with us and telling us the points that we've done well and which ones we need to improve on, so now we have more of a clear idea of what we have to do next," he said.

"It was mainly a 15-minute session talking about everything, our feelings in the team, what he thought about us, and everyone had the chance to do it, so I think everyone has got a clear idea of what is demanded from the manager and the club.

"That's been great and we've now got better possibilities to make sure we're doing the right thing every time we step onto the pitch,” Romeu underlined.
