NAIROBI, Kenya- Gor Mahia FC coach Hassan Oktay insists that despite their being a lot of
work to be done, his team is prepared to battle it out against league leaders Mathare
United FC on Sunday.
Mathare sit at the
top of the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) with 13 points, seven ahead of
ninth-place Gor as the two sides prepare to lock horns at the Kasarani Stadium
in Nairobi.
Oktay, who took over
after the departure of Briton Dylan Kerr, acknowledged that things are not yet
going his way but he is upbeat that Gor will soon find the supreme form that
has seen them win back to back SPL titles.
“Last season did not
end well and we still haven’t recovered enough from the losses to be able to
settle.
“The boys are giving
it their all in training, which is a sign of good things to come. We know what
we want to achieve and we start with the game on Sunday,” Oktay told SportPesa News.
The signing of
Kenya’s national team record scorer Dennis Oliech this week boosted Gor, who has
joined the record league champions on a lucrative two-year contract.
Younger players
The former Ligue 1 striker
has been training with K’Ogalo and
stated his intention to work extra hard, in an effort to help the side regain
their top form as they aim to retain the SPL title.
“Dennis (Oliech) is
still a great football player. I have seen his technical ability, team spirit
and his ambition, I have no doubt he will be a key factor to our season.
“We are working
carefully to get him back to full fitness and then we’ll go from there,” Oktay
stated.
“His presence on and
off the pitch will also be great for the younger players who can learn a thing
or two from the experienced striker,” he added.
It’s uncertain
whether Oliech will feature in the match on Sunday against his former employers
but he is expected to play against Posta Rangers next Wednesday at the Moi
Stadium in Kisumu.
A victory for Gor, to
add onto the 2-0 win over Chemelil Sugar FC last weekend, could see them break
into the top five for the first time this season- still with a game in hand.
