NAIROBI, Kenya- Hosts Mathare United FC edged Kakamega Homeboyz FC 3-2 in a SportPesa Premier League (SPL) match staged at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani in Nairobi on Saturday evening to return to the top of the standings.

Allan Wanga gave the visitors a 0-1 lead in the ninth minute but this was short lived by Crispin Oduor who followed with a quick brace in the 20th and 27th to put Mathare 2-1 ahead at half time.

Mathare dominated the second half with the help of marauding foward Cliff Nyakeya who stretched their tally to 3-1 in the 60th.

Nyakeya picked a midfield pass, ran with it to the left flank before beating Homeboyz custodian Gabriel Andika to the net.

It was the fourth goal that Nyakeya was notching this season, placing him at the top of SPL scoring chart alongside Uganda International and Gor Mahia FC winger, Erisa Ssekisabu, who raked a hatrick against Mount Kenya United FC in a mid week fixture held at the venue on Wednesday.

Luke Namanda scored for Homeboyz in the 90th to reduce the deficit to 3-2 before the final whistle.

The victory saw Mathare open a two point gap at the apex against second placed Bandari FC who had eclipsed them on Thursday  after edging Posta Rangers FC 1-0 at Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa.

Unbeaten Mathare have so far accumulated 20 points following six wins and two draws while 11th placed Homeboyz  have eight after two wins, two draws and four losses.

At the same time, visiting Vihiga United FC held Kenya Commercial Bank FC 1- 1 at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on the day.

Shami Kibwana put the bankers a head in the sixth as Stephen Wakhanya leveled for the visitors in the 33rd before the rivals proceeded for break.

KCB were reduced to ten men in the 63rd but Vihiga were unable to capitalise on this advantage to carry the day.

The draw moved KCB from 17th to 16th on the log  with six after one win,three draws and four losses while Vihiga moved to 13th with eight after one victory, five draws and two losses.
