Leopards, Sharks Through To SportPesa Shield Last 16, Sofapaka, Ulinzi Out

KAKAMEGA, Kenya- Former champions AFC Leopards SC were on fire as they walloped Kitale based Transfoc FC 4-0 at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega to sail into round 16 of SportPesa Shield on Saturday.

Isaac Oduro opened the score sheets for the 2017 winners in the 12th minute to give Leopards a 1-0 lead at half time.

Brian Marita stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 49th before a goal each from Vincent Oburu (60th) and Marcel Kaheza (87th) sealed the victory for Ingwe.

Earlier at the same venue, title holders Kariobangi Sharks FC thrashed Elim FC from Trans Nzoia 5-0  to qualify for last 16.

Sharks were put ahead by Henry Juma who notched a brace in the 38th and 68th as Eric Kapaito (51st), Sydney Lokale (75th) and  Nicholas Omondi (80th) also found the back of the net to stretch Sharks tally before the final whistle.

Elsewhere, Muranga Seal FC thrashed visiting Kisumu All-Stars FC 4-1 in a one sided  ‘Hand Shake Derby’ staged at the packed Kiharu Grounds in Muranga County.

Both sides battled to a barren draw in the first half before Simon Ochieng put the hosts 1-0 ahead in the 47th. Gerishom Arabe leveled 1-1 for All-Stars in the 56th.

Two quick goals by Ochieng and substitute Wilson Kamau in the 76th and 79th stretched Seal tally to 3-1 as Fabian Bathez found the back of the net in the 90th to grant Seal a 4-1 win.

“The game was good but we lacked concentration in the last minute. We will now embark on the National Super League as we have a crunch tie against Nairobi Stima FC at Moi Stadium on Wednesday.

“We wish Seal all the best as they carry on in the tournament,” All-Stars head coach and former Gor Mahia FC marksman Francis Oduor underlined.

Seal tactician, David Mahira, who also plied trade for Gor as a midfielder in his hey-days, noted that their victory was as a result of hard work and good preparations they had ahead of the clash.

He thanked the home crowd for turning up in large numbers to cheer his Football Kenya Federation Division One League side that is taking part in the cup contest for the first time.

Seal are now poised to meet Sharks in the next round.

“We will  tackle Sharks with the same courage we had today, I believe  there is no underdog in this tournament,” highlighted Mahira.

Sharks, who are also the 2019 SportPesa Cup champions, felled Sofapaka 3-2 in last years final held at Kasarani to qualify for the Confederation Cup where they thrashed Arta Solar 7 of Djibouti both home and away before being edged out by Asante Kotoko FC of Ghana in the play-offs.
