Kamworor, Obiri Punch Tickets To IAAF Doha World Championships

NAIROBI, Kenya- Former two-time World Cross Country champion Geoffrey Kamworor and reigning women’s title holder Hellen Obiri braced to the tape in men and women’s 10,000m categories to punch tickets to the Doha 2019 World Championship at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Kamworor clocked 27:24.76 to win the hotly contested men’s race.

The Kenya Police representative was closely followed by World U-20 champion Rhonex Kipruto who timed 27:26.34 and Rogers Kwemoi (27:26.34) who completed the podium dash.

“The race was very tough, the weather was chilly but I’m glad I won to book for myself a spot in the Kenyan team,” underlined Obiri who timed 31:25.38.

“This is the second time I’m running 10,000m and the victory has inspired me, it has given me an assurance that I’m capable of bagging gold in the discipline.

“Anyone could have won the contest since it had no pace maker,I was able to beat the pool because of my own personal tactics,” underscored Obiri who added that she will be out to register a personal best in Doha.

“ I will discuss with Athletics Kenya and my agent to see if I can double in both 5000m and 10,000m while in Doha though I know it will be such a tall order,” she said.

Obiri was followed by former World Cross Country champion (2015) Agnes Tirop who ended the tape in 31:25.90 as Monica Wanjiru  of Kenya Prisons bagged third place in 31:26.22
