Juma Strike Sinks Bandari As Gor Mahia Reclaim KPL Super Cup

MACHAKOS, Kenya- Gor Mahia FC edged Bandari FC 1-0 to reclaim the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Super Cup trophy at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday.

The solitary goal was notched by Lawrence Juma in the 64th minute to grant K’Ogalo the deserved win.

Juma pounced on a rebound from Nicholas Kipkirui which was deflected by John Major, beating hawk-eyed Bandari custodian Michael Wanyika to the right side of the net.

Buoyed by their Green Army fans, the winners largely controlled the game in the entertaining opening half.

Bandari’s William Wadri had his shot goes wide in the 15th same as his team-mate David Kingatwa whose free kick in the 24th also went the same direction as coast based outfit tried to get a foothold in the encounter.

Ghanaian import Francis Afriyie failed to capitalised on Bandari defence confusion six minutes later same as their top goal poacher Yema Mwama who lost an open chance in the 40th by hitting wide after successfully wading through the tight Gor defence.

Gor were reduced to ten men in the 77th when Tobias Otieno, who had been earlier booked, was red-carded following a hard tackle on Wadri.

Gor surrendered the trophy, contested between league champions and domestic cup winners,  last year to SportPesa Cup holders Kariobangi Sharks FC who won 1-0.

This was the first domestic game for new  Gor tactician Steven Pollack since taking charge from Cypriot Hassan Oktay who resigned about two weeks ago. Pollack reiterated he is out to bag a 19th title with Gor who have made 17 new signings ahead of the KPL season that kicks off on August 30.
