DAR-ES-SALAAM, Tanzania- SportPesa Premier League (SPL) Champions have landed in the proverbial Group D of death in the 2018/19 CAF Confederations Cup after being drawn against Egyptian titans, Zamalek FC and Angolan heavyweights, Petro Atletico FC of Luanda.

Once again, Gor who qualified for the group stages of the second tier competition for a second season in a row on Sunday will also face an Algerian side with NA Hussein Dey in a pool that is expected to produce fireworks in the race for the quarterfinals.

The Kenyan champions- who will defend their SportPesa Cup title in Tanzania from Wednesday- made the group phase of the tournament following a battling 0-0 draw away to New Star de Douala FC at Limbe Stadium that sealed a 2-1 victory on aggregate.

Gor will open their Group D campaign with a glamour tie against five-time CAF Champions League winners, Zamalek on February 3 in Nairobi before travelling to Luanda to face the 15-time Angolan league winners a week later (February 13).

The SPL winners will then play a double header against Hussein Dey with the home leg on February 24 and the away clash March 3 before the most difficult tie on paper when they visit Cairo to face Zamalek on March 10.

Atletico will travel to Nairobi in the final round of Group D encounters on March 17 with Gor aiming at going deeper than last year when they missed a quarterfinal ticket by a single point after finishing third in a pool that had USM Alger FC (Algeria), Rayon Sport FC (Rwanda) as Yanga SC (Tanzania) finished last.

Gor were scheduled to arrive in Dar-es-Salaam in the early hours of Tuesday where they will kick their SportPesa Cup title defence against tournament debutants Mbao FC of Tanzania on Wednesday at 4pm EAT.
