NAIROBI, Kenya- The battle to avoid SportPesa Premier League (SPL) relegation took another turn on Wednesday afternoon when Chemelil Sugar FC thwarted the might of Sofapaka FC as 10-man KCB FC escaped from Nzoia Sugar FC with a priceless 1-0 to sustain their firing finish to their first season back in the top flight.

In another SPL goal fest, SportPesa Shield winners Kariobangi Sharks FC came back from the dead to force an absorbing 3-3 draw at Ulinzi Stars FC in a roaring fightback that saw William Muluya's side come from 1-3 down to earn a point.

Sony Sugar FC (55) emerged with a credible 2-1 victory at Kakamega Homeboyz FC (52) in what a shootout for fourth place as they close in on their highest league finish in recent times.

In the first match of the double header at Kenyatta Stadium, the visiting sugar millers battled to a heroic 0-0 draw to derail the ambitions of Sofapaka overhauling Bandari FC in second as they pulled six points clear of the dreaded drop zone.

The Dockers who were relying on a monumental collapse by leaders Gor Mahia FC to have a sniff at the crown instead handed the latter the 2018/19 SPL title on a plate after they shared a barren draw with home side Mathare United FC.

That stalemate sealed a record-extending 18th league title and a third SPL triumph in a row for Gor who were playing Vihiga United FC in the last game of Wednesday.

Western Stima FC edged Posta Rangers FC in the other game at Moi Stadium Kisumu to leave them only a point short of the top 10.

The mailmen on the other hand will be looking nervously over their shoulders since they are not entirely out of the woods yet.

Chemelil improved their tally to 31 after frustrating the 2009 league winners who inched up a point to 58 in third with the result also piling pressure on Zoo Kericho FC (28) who occupy 16th and the SPL/National Super League play-off spot to beat hosts and seventh-placed Tusker FC (46) on Thursday at the Ruaraka Stadium in Nairobi.

Chemelil keeper, Morgan Alube, was the hero for the visitors after denying the rampaging Sofapaka forwards the reward they deserved for bossing the match with a string of fine saves.
